AUGUST | WEEK 32
This week, we will finish 1 John as well as the 2nd and 3rd letters of John. Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.
Discussion Questions:
• What does it look like to love our brother or sister in Christ? (1 John 3:16-18)?
• How do you test the spirits (1 John 4:1-3)? What does it mean to confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh?
• How can you know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13)?
• How should we respond to false teachers (2 John 1:10)?
• What does John have to say about Gaius’ spiritual and physical health (3 John 1:1-3)?
Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:
• Jesus’ last words on the cross were, “It is finished” (John 19:30). What did Jesus mean by this? – Jesus had accomplished His mission on earth. He had made atonement for the sins of humanity (1 John 2:2).
• What did John say was his purpose in writing his gospel (John 20:30-31)? - So that his readers might come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And that that belief would result in eternal life.
• Why 153 fish (John 21:11)? – It is a mystery. But the large catch with an unbroken net could be telling us that the gospel can reach the whole world without breaking. There is always room for more.
• What does it mean to walk in the light (1 John 1:5-7)? – God is light. So to walk in the light is to walk with God. To be where He is and enjoy fellowship with Him.
• How does 1 John 2:15-17, especially verse 16, relate to Genesis 3:6? - The desires of the flesh (good for food), the desires of the eyes (pleasing to the eye), and the pride of life (desirable for gaining wisdom). What Eve saw in the forbidden fruit is what leads us to sin today.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the assurance of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Help me to love others with actions, not just words, and to walk faithfully in Your truth each day. Give me wisdom to recognize what is true, courage to reject what is false, and a heart that reflects Your love in every relationship. May my life, like Gaius', be healthy in spirit and bring honor to You. Amen.
