JANUARY WEEK 3

Welcome to week 3 of Rooted. This week will cover Matthew, chapters 8 through 12. The Sermon on the Mount, in chapters 5-7, concentrated on Jesus’ teachings. In contrast, chapters 8-12 are primarily about what Jesus did.

Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.

Discussion Questions:

• What was so significant about the faith of the centurion? (Matt. 8:8-12)

• Why don’t you put new wine into old wineskins? (9:16-17)

• What did Jesus mean by bringing a sword to the world rather than peace? (Matt. 10:34-39)

• Why did Jesus say it would be more bearable for Sodom than for Capernaum on the day of Judgment? (Matt. 11:23-24)

• What is the unforgivable sin? (Matt. 12:31-32)

Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:

•  What was the significance of John the Baptist’s clothing and food? (Matt. 3:4) Does it remind you of anyone else? - John the Baptist dressed like Elijah, the prophet who was prophesied to return and prepare the way for the day of the Lord (Malachi 4:5-6).

• What is the significance of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness? (Matt. 4:1-11) – It parallels the 40 years that Israel was tested during their wilderness wanderings. But Jesus, unlike Israel, never gave in to the temptations He faced. Matthew will make several other allusions to Israel as he tells the story of Jesus.

• What did Jesus mean by saying He had come to fulfill the Law and the Prophets? (Matt. 5:17) - The Old Testament points us to Jesus. And the Old Testament is best understood in light of who Jesus was and what He did.

• How do you store up treasure in heaven? (Matt. 6:19-21) - By using your treasure here to care for other people. Doing good with what you have. It would be like making a bank transfer from checking to savings.

• What does Jesus tell us is the distinguishing mark of His true disciples? As opposed to those who just pretend? (Matt. 7:21-23) - The true disciple does what God asks of them. Others may do all sorts of good things. But if they are not following the will of God, it is all for nothing.
