JANUARY WEEK 4
Welcome to week 4 of Rooted. This week will cover Matthew, chapters 13 through 17. These chapters include a collection of parables, additional miracles, an increasing conflict with the religious leaders, and Jesus preparing His disciples for His coming death and resurrection.
Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.
Discussion Questions:
• What was Jesus teaching in the parable of the yeast? (Matt. 13:33)
• Why did Peter start to sink after walking on the water? (Matt. 14:28-32)
• Why did Jesus seem so reluctant to help the Canaanite woman? (Matt 15:21-28)
• What is the leaven of the Pharisees? (Matt. 16:5-12)
• What do you suppose Jesus, Moses, and Elijah were talking about on the Mount of Transfiguration? (Matt. 17:1-3)
Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:
• What was so significant about the centurion (Matt. 8:8-12)? - The centurion was a man of authority and was himself under authority. And the centurion recognized Jesus, not just as a healer, but as one who had real authority. His understanding of who Jesus was exceeded that of anyone else.
• Why don’t you put new wine into old wineskins (9:16-17)? - The fermentation process will cause the skin to stretch. Putting a wineskin through this twice can cause it to burst.
• What did Jesus mean by bringing a sword to the world rather than peace (Matt. 10:34-39)? - While the gospel brings peace with God, it can cause conflict with those who reject it.
• Why did Jesus say it would be more bearable for Sodom than for Capernaum on the day of Judgment (Matt. 11:23-24)? - Because Capernaum had seen Christ and heard Him, yet rejected him, so their guilt was greater.
• What is the unforgivable sin (Matt. 12:31-32)? - Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. What this is, is uncertain. But likely attributing the work of the Spirit to people or demons.
