JULY | WEEK 28
This week, we will continue on our journey through the Gospel of John, chapters 4-8. Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.
Discussion Questions:
• How do we worship God in spirit and truth? (John 4:23)
• In John 5:24, Jesus said that the one who heard His words and believed in God had eternal life. What does it mean to believe in God?
• In John 6:44, Jesus said that no one could come to Him unless they were first drawn by the Father. What does it mean to be drawn by God? And who does God draw?
• How can we know that Jesus’ words are from God? (John 7:17)
• Why did the Jews get so upset when Jesus told them that He was before Abraham? (John 8:56-59)
Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:
• What is the hope we have as believers? (Titus 2:13) - The great hope we have as believers is tied up in the return of Jesus for us. He brings the salvation and eternal life that we look forward to.
• As believers, what should we devote ourselves to? (Titus 3:8) – We should devote ourselves to good works. To make a difference in the world we live in.
• Who is the Word? And what does John have to say about Him? (John 1:1-3, 14) – Jesus is the Word. John tells us that He is God. And that He has become a human. He is fully both.
• John 2:14-16 records Jesus as clearing the temple of the money-changers and those selling animals. Why did He do this? And what should we take away from it? – It was in part a fulfillment of prophecy. His disciples later remembered that it was written, “Zeal for God’s house will consume me.” We are God’s temple now. What do we allow in that temple? And how might Jesus feel about that?
• What does it mean to be born again (John 3:1-3)? – It refers to a spiritual birth, born of the Spirit. When we are born again, we become a new creature.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Yourself through Jesus. Draw my heart closer to You each day, and help me to respond with faith that is genuine - not just knowing about You, but truly trusting and following You. Teach me to worship You in spirit and in truth, to recognize Your voice, and to gladly obey what You speak. Remove anything in my heart that keeps me from seeing Jesus for who He truly is, and help me to live each day in the hope and new life You have given me. Amen.
