JULY/AUG | WEEK 31
This week, we will complete our journey through the Gospel of John, chapters 19-21, and get started on 1 John. Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.
Discussion Questions:
• Jesus’ last words on the cross were, “It is finished” (John 19:30). What did Jesus mean by this?
• What did John say was his purpose in writing his gospel? (John 20:30-31)
• Why 153 fish? (John 21:11)
• What does it mean to walk in the light? (1 John 1:5-7)
• How does 1 John 2:15-17, especially verse 16, relate to Genesis 3:6?
Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:
• What does the Holy Spirit do in the life of the believer? (John 14:15-17, 26, 15:26, 16:7, 12-14) – He will be our teacher, guiding us through God’s word. He will affirm Jesus as our Savior and Lord. And He will glorify Jesus, drawing me toward Him.
• What does it look like to love one another? (John 15:12-13) – The greatest expression of love is to lay down our lives for another. I can do that by meeting their needs ahead of my own.
• What does the Holy Spirit do in the world? (John 16:8-11) – He convicts the people of this world concerning their sin and coming judgment. Without that conviction, no one would ever come to Christ.
• What does it mean for us as fellow believers to become one as Jesus and the Father are one? (John 17:20-21) – We cannot become one in essence like Jesus and the Father. But we can grow so close that we have one heart, mind, and spirit (Eph. 4:1-6).
• What did Jesus mean when he told Pilate that His kingdom was not of this world? (John 18:33-36) – The kingdom of God (heaven) is the spiritual reign of Christ in the hearts of His people. It is not a threat to earthly kingdoms.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus and His finished work on the cross. Help me to walk in Your light, turn from the things that pull me away from You, and follow Christ with my whole heart. May my life reflect Your love and lead others to the hope found in You. Amen.
