OCTOBER  |  WEEK 42

This week, we finish the Gospel of Mark, chapters 12-16. Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.

Discussion Questions:

• How can the widow’s two cents be more than the large sums others put into the offering box? (Mark 12:41-44)

• What does Jesus mean when He tells us to stay awake in Mark 13:32-37?

• What is the significance of the streaker in Mark 14:51-52?

• What would be the consequences for us if Jesus had saved Himself and come down off the cross? (Mark 15:31-32)

• Many translations note that Mark 16:9-20 was not in the original writing. Why is that?

Some Answers from Last Week's Questions:

• In Mark 7:24-30, we find the story of a Gentile woman who came to Jesus for help. Why did Jesus initially express reluctance to help her? – It may well have been a test of her persistence.

• What does it mean to take up your cross and follow Jesus? (Mark 8:34) – It involves self-denial, doing what and going where Jesus leads.

• At the Mount of Transfiguration, why did Peter want to make three tents? And what was the significance of God’s response? (Mark 9:4-8) – Peter elevated Jesus to the same level as Moses and Elijah. God put Him well above the other two.

• What did Jesus mean when He said that the kingdom of God belongs to those who receive it like a child? (Mark 10:13-16) – We cannot think our way into the kingdom. We need to accept it with a child-like faith.

• How important is it that we forgive others (Mark 11:25)? – It is essential if we expect to experience the Father’s forgiveness.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as I finish the Gospel of Mark, help me see You more clearly and follow You more faithfully. Teach me to give You my whole heart, stay awake to Your presence, and trust the love You showed me on the cross through Jesus. May the hope of the resurrection shape the way I live today. Amen.
