FEBRUARY WEEK 6

Welcome to week 6 (Feb. 1-7) of Rooted OT. This week, we will continue our reading of Genesis, covering chapters 23-27. These chapters are primarily about Isaac, but they also cover the deaths of Abraham and Sarah, the birth of his sons, and some competition between them.

Discussion Questions:

As you read this week, here are some questions to help you explore the truths contained in these chapters.

• Why did Abraham go to the effort and expense of buying a cave and field as a burial spot for Sarah? (Gen. 23) Why not just bury her in a cemetery?

• Why did Abraham want Isaac to marry someone from his extended family rather than from the local Canaanites? (Gen. 24:1-4)

• What is the significance of the birthright that Esau sold for a bowl of soup? (Gen. 25:29-34)
(See https://www.gotquestions.org/blessing-birthright.html )

• Why did God tell Isaac not to be afraid? (Gen. 26:23-25)

• What is the significance of the blessing that Jacob stole from his brother Esau? (27:35-37)

Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:

• Is anything too difficult for the Lord? (Gen. 18:13-14) What significance does that have for us when the Lord gives us a task to do? – How can anything be too difficult for the creator of the universe? Including enabling an old and barren woman to conceive. And enabling us to do whatever task he has given us.

• What value did Abraham’s prayer for Sodom have? (Gen. 18:22-33, 19:29) – Because of it, Lot and his family were brought to a place of safety before Sodom was destroyed.

• What is the relationship between Abraham and Sarah? (Gen. 20:12) – They were married, but also half-siblings. They had a common father but different mothers.

• How long had Abraham been waiting for Isaac, the child of promise? (Gen. 21:5) See Genesis 12:4. – He was 75 years old when he entered Canaan and received God’s promise of countless descendants. And he was 100 when Isaac was born. So he had been waiting 25 years.

• How would you have responded to the test Abraham faced? (Gen. 22:1-3)– I suspect my response would have been quite different from Abraham’s. I am pretty sure I would have balked.
