JANUARY WEEK 2

Welcome to week 2 of Rooted's Old Testament reading plan. This week, we will continue our reading of Genesis, covering chapters 3-7. These chapters continue the early history of humanity from the fall in the garden to the destruction of the earth via a global flood.

Like the creation accounts in the first two chapters, the stories contained in this week's chapters are highly debated. But there are truths to learn from them regardless of your perspective on the scientific and historical accuracy of the accounts.

Discussion Questions:

As you get started, here are some questions to help you explore the truths contained in these chapters.

• In Genesis 2:17, God told Adam that on the day he ate from the Tree of Knowledge, he would die. So what happened to him when he ate from the tree? (Gen. 3:6)

• What did God mean when He told Cain that sin was crouching at the door and its desire was for him? (Gen. 4:7)

• What happened to Enoch? And why? (Gen. 5:21-24)

• Does God change His mind? (Gen. 6:5-7)

• How does Genesis 7:11 reflect the cosmology (structure of the creation) of the ancient world? This web page will help answer this question: https://icsresources.org/wp-content/uploads/Ancient-Cosmologies.pdf

Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:

• As you read the first chapter of Genesis, what do you discover about God and His creative activity? And how might this differ from the creation accounts of other ancient peoples? – God is separate from His creation - He is not part of it. He spoke the world into existence by His command, not through struggle or conflict. And humanity was created to represent God on earth, not to live as slaves.

• What is the significance of Adam’s naming of the animals and birds? (Gen. 2:19-20) – Naming something demonstrates authority over that thing. Adam naming the animals demonstrates he is over them.
