JANUARY WEEK 4

Welcome to week 4 of Rooted's Old Testament reading plan. This week, we will continue our reading of Genesis, covering chapters 13-17. These chapters continue the story of Abram/Abraham for the first twenty or so years of his sojourn in Canaan. Several times in these chapters, you will see God appearing to Abram to reaffirm and expand His covenant with him.

Discussion Questions:

As you get started, here are some questions to help you explore the truths contained in these chapters.

•  When Abram and Lot split up, why did Lot choose the plain of the Jordan? (Gen 13:10-11) Why might that not have been such a good idea?

•  Who was Melchizedek? (Gen 14:18-20)

•  What is the significance of Abram’s belief and God’s declaration? (Gen 15:6) See Romans 4:1-5 for help with this.

•  What do you think of Sarai’s suggestion that Abram sleep with her maidservant? (Gen. 16:1-3)
See https://biblehub.com/topical/s/sons_of_his_concubines.htm

•  What was the significance of circumcision (Gen. 17:9-14)?

Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:

•  In what way does chapter 8 resemble chapter 1 of Genesis? (Gen. 8:5, 17) – Genesis 8 is a story of re-creation as the land rises out of the water and the cleansed earth is repopulated.

•  What covenant did God establish with all living things? (Gen. 9:12-17) – God promised that He would never destroy the whole earth again by flood. And the rainbow is a sign of the covenant.

•  What purpose is served by listing all of the descendants of Noah’s three sons? (Gen 10) – It is a listing of all of the nations Israel would interact with and where they fit. Like a who’s who of nations.

•  What was the issue with the Tower of Babel? (Gen. 9:7, 11:4) – Rather than scattering over the face of the earth to repopulate it, humanity wanted to stay together. And the tower was supposed to help accomplish that.

•  How were all people on earth blessed through Abraham? (Gen. 12:1-3) – Ultimately, it is through Jesus and the salvation He offers to the world.
