MAY WEEK 20

This week, we will continue through the first half of Isaiah, covering chapters 29 through 33.

Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.

Discussion Questions:

• Who is Ariel? (Hint, not a mermaid) (Isa. 29:1-2)

• How tempting is it to be one of the people described in Isaiah 30:9-11?

• What happens when we seek help from human sources rather than God? (Isa. 31:1)

• What might God be saying to us in His message to complacent women? (Isa. 32:9-10)

• Who can dwell with God’s consuming fire? (Isa. 33:14-16)

Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:

• Who are the powers in the heavens who are being punished (Isa. 24:21)? And what is it they might have done? – These are angelic beings who are being punished. Likely the angels who rebelled in Genesis 6:1-4 and who are now confined in prison awaiting judgment (2 Pet. 2:4, Jude 1:6).

• What is Isaiah 25:6-8 describing? – It sounds very much like the feast in the kingdom of God discussed in Luke 14:15-24.

• What dead will not live? (Isa. 26:14) And which dead will live? (Isa. 26:19) – The wicked who do not regard the majesty of the Lord (Isa. 26: 10) will not live again. But God’s people will rise and shout for joy.

• Who or what is Leviathan? (Isa. 27:1) – Leviathan is a mythological chaos monster that God will destroy ‘in that day’. He cannot stand against God.

• What is the covenant with death that the people of Jerusalem had entered into? (Isa. 28:14-15) And what is God’s response to their covenant? (Isa. 28:18-19) – It would seem to be an attempt on their part to put off their date with the grave until a later time in return for some sacrifice on their part now.  But God tells them that He is canceling their covenant with death. It will do them no good.

Prayer: Father, as I continue to read through Isaiah this week, help me not to drift from You or become spiritually complacent. Forgive me for the times I rely more on my own plans, strength, or comfort instead of fully trusting You. Give me a heart that listens, obeys, and stays close to You - even when Your truth challenges me. Teach me to walk with humility and live in a way that honors You. Thank You for being my refuge, my strength, and my hope. Let Your Word shape my heart this week. In Jesus’ name, amen.
