MAY WEEK 22
This week, we will finish the first half of Isaiah (chapter 39) and return to the Psalms for a couple of weeks.
Don’t forget to check out the Rooted Facebook page for a bit more discussion on each chapter.
Discussion Questions:
• Who are some of Hezekiah’s descendants who found themselves in service to the king of Babylon? (Isa. 39:7, Dan. 1:3-7)
• What is the lament of the psalmist in Psalm 12:1-5?
• What is the psalmist's prayer in Psalm 13:1-2? What can we learn from this?
• Who is the fool in Psalm 14:1? And what is it that makes them a fool?
• Who can dwell in the house of God? (Psa. 15:1-3)
Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:
• What is meant by the expression, ‘devoted to destruction’ (Isaiah 34:2, 5)? – Something devoted to destruction is given completely to God through physical destruction. It might be thought of as God’s share of the plunder in a holy war.
• What is the ‘Way of Holiness’ (Isa. 35:8-10)? – It is pictured as a highway leading to Jerusalem that only the righteous can travel. It can also be thought of as the way of life for the righteous. A way that leads to the New Jerusalem, our final dwelling.
• What makes the Lord different than the gods of the nations Assyria had conquered (Isa. 37:18-20)? – They were only false gods who were powerless. The Lord is the creator of all things, including the Assyrians who were mocking Him.
• What did God have to say to Assyria (Isa. 37:28-29)? – God knew what they were doing, going beyond the limits He had set for them. And, as a result, they were facing God’s judgment.
• Does God answer prayer (Isa. 38:4-6)? – Yes, He does. There are many examples of answered prayer in the Scripture, including this one of Hezekiah.
Prayer:
Lord, as I read through Isaiah and the Psalms this week, help me to trust You even when life feels uncertain or overwhelming. When I feel forgotten, remind me that You still see me, hear me, and walk with me. Give me wisdom to follow Your ways and a heart that seeks what is true and good. Teach me through these passages, shape my faith, and draw me closer to You each day. Amen.
