Discussion Questions:

• Why did the Lord leave some of the nations in Canaan unconquered? (Judg. 3:1-6). What reason might be unstated in this passage?

• Who was the woman who gained glory for Sisera’s defeat? (Judg. 4:9)

• What insights does Judges 5:6-7 give concerning conditions in Israel before Deborah led the revolt against Jabin and Sisera?

• Who might the ‘angel of the Lord’ be? (Judg. 6:11-18, especially verses 12 & 14)

• Why did God want Gideon to have a smaller army when he went up against the Midianites? (Judg. 7:2-7)


Some Answers to Last Week's Questions:

• Judges 1 describes the individual tribes' attempts to claim their land and drive out the Canaanites. What were the results? – The results were mixed, but generally the individual tribes were unable to completely conquer their territory, leaving some of the original inhabitants in place.

• What is the cycle described in Judges 2:11-19? – Israel would turn away from the Lord, doing evil. God would turn them over to their enemies. When Israel was in distress, they would cry out to the Lord. And He would raise up a deliverer to free them from their oppression. But once that judge died, the cycle would repeat.


Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me trust You even when I cannot see what You are doing. Keep me from repeating the same patterns that pull me away from You. Like Gideon, teach me to depend on Your strength rather than my own, and give me courage to follow wherever You lead. Amen.
