JANUARY WEEK 1

Welcome to week one of Rooted's Old Testament reading plan. This plan is a multi-year journey through the Old Testament, beginning with Genesis. It will cover every book in the Old Testament over a period of four years. You are welcome to do as much, or as little of it as you have the time and interest for.

This short week, we will look at just the first two chapters of Genesis, covering the two creation accounts. The study of Genesis can be highly controversial. Do you take it as a historically and scientifically accurate account of creation? Simply a myth with no basis in reality? Or somewhere in between?

This is a question that will be largely ignored as we walk through the pages of Genesis. Instead, we will focus on the theological truths to be found in the pages of Genesis. Truths that transcend the debate about the literal accuracy of the accounts.

Discussion Questions:

As you get started, here are a couple of questions to help you in your exploration of theological truths:

• As you read the first chapter of Genesis, what do you discover about God and His creative activity? And how might this differ from the creation accounts of other ancient peoples? (Here is an article that provides more information about this).

• What is the significance of Adam’s naming of the animals and birds? (Gen. 2:19-20)
